Canadian Patriotism

Today is Canada Day, eh!  To help our northern neighbors celebrate their sovereignty, I’ve chosen a few trivial tidbits to share with you aboot those crazy Canadians.

1. Canada Day celebrates the events of July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act of 1867 unified all of the Canadian provinces under one government.  It’s not like Independence Day in the United States. It’s more like if we celebrated the signing of our Constitution.  In fact, Canadians have renamed the BNA Act to the Constitution Act, 1867.

2. Canada has the second largest land mass in the world.  However, only 33 million people live in Canada, making for the fourth lowest population density in the world.

3. Canadians believe that Santa Claus is from Canada.  Silly Canadians.

4. The United States has invaded Canada twice.  In 1775 and 1812.

5. Canada’s national sport is… lacrosse.

6. Canadians invented the zipper, telephone, electron microscope, Wonderbra,  basketball and Trivial Pursuit.

7. The Canadian flag with the red maple leaf was adopted in 1965.  Before that time, Canada flew the Union Flag (the same one that Great Britain flies).

8. “O, Canada” was already 100 years old when it officially became Canada’s national anthem on July 1, 1980.

O, Canada, we stand on gaurd for thee!

Vaya con Dios, Amigos.

Last Wednesday, my friend Tett asked me to tell him three things about Sea Monkeys.  I could not offer any solid facts, so I hunkered down for some research time.  I won’t be caught off-guard the next time that somebody asks me about Sea Monkeys.  Here are a few tidbits for you: Read the rest of this entry »

I have made “8 things” a regular Wednesday post lately.  This week I had to work overnight on Monday and Tuesday night and open my store on Wednesday.  The adjustment (or inability to adjust) has left me with little energy, so I decided to make my list an easy one this week. None of these are my original theories.  They are just a few of the interesting ones that I have come across.  Some are more of a stretch than others. Read the rest of this entry »

Rage Against The Machine – Ann Coulter hates them.  Is there any better reason to love them?  Their goal is to be the voice of marginalized people throughout the world through their music.  Zach De La Rocha’s lyrics are powerful, and Tom Morello has found ways to play the guitar that most people would never dream was possible.

Favorite Song:  Know Your Enemy

Favorite Lyric:  “Terror’s the product ya push, Well I’m a truth addict, aw shit I got a head rush” (Vietnow)

Bonus Points:  At Lollapalooza 1993, all four members of the band stood on the stage naked, with duct tape over their mouths, for 15 minutes to protest censorship. Read the rest of this entry »

  1. My middle name is Larkin.  You might have figured this one out since it is right there at the top of my blog.  Larkin Strom, my great-great-great grandfather, was the first Strom (in my family) to come to the United States.  He was a ship captain who brought Swedish immigrants to the United States to settle in Illinois.  Many of my relatives share my middle name, and I want my first son to have the same middle name as well.
